What Pride Month Can Teach Us About Coming Out

Before my tentative migration to the ‘burbs, for the lore of better schools and bigger backyards, I lived in San Diego’s awesomely eclectic and mostly gay neighbor of Hillcrest. I rented a musty bottom unit in an old split level just a few blocks off Balboa Park. As I ran the park every morning, it quickly became a living calendar, marking the swap of seasons and arrival of holidays. In the fall, the skeletons and scaffolding of Haunted Trail appeared, then Christmas on the Prado, also nice with the bewildered kids ogling lights and parents doting on the cuteness. But it wasn’t until the weather warmed and the year turned and the cavalcade of rainbowed motorhomes rumbled in along with the glittered floats, that Hillcrest, and downtown, truly came alive.  Gay Pride (now LGBTQ+ Pride) had arrived and with it, a communal electricity and excitement I’d never seen as a girl weaned on the vanilla cake of a traditional family milieu.

San Diego Museum to Celebrate Art Alive

The San Diego Museum of Art’s 40th annual Art Alive exhibition will kick off the summer with a weekend of newly imagined festive floral events. The celebration includes nearly 100 floral designers’ exquisite interpretations of famous works of art from the Museum, with the sights, scents and sounds of the floral exhibition spilling onto the Balboa Park Plaza de Panama for a variety of outdoor activities. On view June 18 – June 20, 2021, this highly anticipated San Diego tradition is the Museum’s signature fundraiser in support of education, outreach programs and special exhibitions.

Hey, we’re only too happy to step in when needed!)
WILDCOAST

We've teamed with WILDCOAST to help the worthy nonprofit tell the world about their vital work conserving coastal and marine systems to address climate change through natural solutions. One story we will be telling is about Blue Carbon. Heard of it yet? You will soon enough! Simply put, blue carbon is carbon that’s captured and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems. This is especially important since, in the past 100 years, human activity has released an excess of carbon that causes climate change. Luckily, our coastal ecosystems are incredibly efficient at removing harmful amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and can store it for thousands of years. Blue carbon ecosystems like mangroves, sea grasses, and tidal marshes are among the most efficient carbon sinks on the planet.

WILDCOAST has launched the One Million Mangroves Initiative, and it only costs $1 to plant one mangrove sapling to help restore our healthy climate. Donate here.
